So far this mushroom has been only found 4 times, fruiting rice paddies from two locations on Koh Samui Island in the Gulf of Thailand. Most likely it is possible that this species also fruits in other locations in southern thailand and possibly malaysia. This species is closely related to psilocbye mexicana and is macroscopically similar to psilocbye semilanceata. It is the first species found outside mexico that is similar to mushrooms ceremoniously used by native Americans in Mesoamerica. Makararoe from New Zealand was first discovered and delineated in the early 90s and is very similar macroscopically and microscopically to Ps.zapotecorum - one mushroom used ceremonially in Mexico. |
