What is a Spore Print?

A mushroom spore print is an isolated spore sample of a particular strain of mushroom. Spore printing is a process for extracting spores from a mushroom for collection and comparison. You can collect a print in a variety of ways including on paper, on foil, or even in a petri dish, you can also collect and store mushroom spores in a vial after printing, vials are good for long term storage or for mixing spores with water. At Spores101.com you can purchase most or our mushroom strains in one, or a variety of these storage mediums. Mushroom spores can also be mixed with liquid and stored in a syringe for future use

Mushroom spore prints on paper

Mushroom spores collected on paper is probably the most common and simple method for collecting a spore print. But its not necessarily the best method, as paper is not a very sturdy medium for protection, its sensitive to moisture and delicate to the touch, absorbing oils and any possible contaminates in the air when its exposed. On occasion some prints might be on paper but in most cases Spores101 has foil or petri plate spore prints.

foil spore print

Collecting spores on aluminum foil.

Collecting spore prints on aluminum foil is another popular and simple method for printing. Foil is readily available like paper, but it has more resistance to the environment, as it can protect from small temperature changes, moisture, and its easy to create a folded seal for storage or shipping. It will also last a very long time without degrading or leaving the spores open to the environment. Most of the mushrooom spore prints available on Spores101 will be in this format.

Petri plate spore print.

The best method for collection and storage of mushroom spores is to use a petri plate.

They are durable and provide a sturdy environment to protect the spores against possible contamination. And they are clear so you can easily see the spores. The plastic of the petri dish is non porous so the spores do not stick to the surface making it easier to work with.

Spores in a vial
Storing spores in a vial.

You can also store mushroom spores in an inoculation vial. After the spores have dropped from a mushroom cap you can move them into the vial for ultimate protection and ease of use. When you are ready to use the spores you can simply inject water into the vial using a syringe, and mix the spores with the liquid. Then re-fill the syringe with the mixture and you have a spore syringe ready to go. Vials are also a very good method for long term storage.
